The Spanish Civil War, fought between July 17, 1936 and April 1, 1939, cost Spain over one-half million people, and the Insurgent victory placed the nation in a state of suspended animation for thirty years. As the war progressed, it drew the participation of thousands of non-Spaniards. The supine and hypocritical attitude of the western democracies towards the intervention by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy on the side of the Insurgents encouraged the dictators in their belief that they could do anything they pleased.

This refusal to act on behalf of the legal government further incited Germany and Italy. Thousands of military “advisors,” technicians, and many combat forces flowed into the fray. German and Italian forces exceeded 100,000 by the end of the war.

In this fearful and bloody civil war the death toll was enormous, with many of the casualties in the civilian population. The rebels under Franco exacted a terrible toll on the population in rebel controlled areas. As the war progressed, many volunteers joined the struggle on both sides. The western democracies avoided direct aid, preferring a “non-intervention” policy.

For Whom the Bell Tolls faithfully recreates the Spanish Civil War. Meticulous research gives you the most accurate Order of Battle information ever presented. No better simulation exists of this war.

Includes separate scenarios for Operation Felix and the “Spanish Torch” variant, as well as extra Europa material, including the armed forces of Portugal.
