The Foundation
The Europa Series Wargames Foundation is an Illinois-registered non-profit. Its current directors include Marc Miller, John M. Astell, and Bill Stone. The Europa Series Wargames Foundation (or simply, The Europa Foundation or the Foundation) exists for a clear and focused purpose: to preserve, protect, and promote the Europa Series of historical wargames as both rigorous military simulations and deeply enjoyable recreational games for students and enthusiasts of military history.
At the heart of the Foundation is the Europa Series itself—the body of games, rules, maps, counters, research notes, and supporting materials that together form one of the most respected operational-level wargame systems ever created. We hold this body of work in trust for the gaming public and for future generations, with a commitment to stewardship rather than exploitation.
To fulfill this mission, the Europa Foundation works to ensure that Europa games remain accessible, playable, and relevant in the modern era. We support the availability of Europa titles both as physical games, suitable for traditional tabletop play, and as digital editions, enabling play through online platforms and support engines. Our goal is not merely preservation, but continued use: Europa is meant to be played, studied, discussed, and improved.
An essential part of the Europa tradition has always been serious, informed discussion of military history and game design. The Foundation actively facilitates this exchange through its own discussion boards and by supporting and cooperating with independent online forums and communities. Our Fair Use Policy is designed to encourage open discussion, analysis, and scholarship, while also protecting the Europa Series’ copyrights and trademarks so that the system remains coherent and sustainable.
The Europa Foundation also supports the commercial publication of Europa titles through its Europa Licensing Program. This program enables qualified publishers to produce new and revised Europa products under license, ensuring professional quality and fidelity to the system, while generating revenue that directly supports the Foundation’s preservation and outreach mission.
In line with its mandate to preserve and innovate, the Foundation has provided Europa Series Wargaming with non-exclusive rights to produce computer software, digital archives, and reprinted, updated, and new games and modules.
Commercial businesses and non-commercial interests who have produced or want to produce Europa-related products—print, digital, or computerized—are invited to contact the Foundation about joining our officially endorsed Europa community through licensing or Fair Use.
