Games

The Europa series of games began in 1973 with GDW’s publication of Drang Nach Osten!—the German invasion of the Soviet Union, 1941-1942. With five full-sized maps and thousands of counters, DNO was the first “monster” wargame ever published.

Massive in size and scope though it was, DNO represented only the tip of the iceberg. It was explicitly designed to be a component of the even larger interlocking series of Europa games covering all of World War II in Europe, North Africa, and nearby areas.

More than two dozen Europa games and modules have been published since 1973. (See list at right.) No other wargame system covers so much of the war at such a detailed level.

  • Map scale of sixteen miles per hex

  • Each turn represents half a month of operations

  • Ground combat unit sizes include divisions, brigades, regiments, and battalions

  • Ground combat units include panzer divisions, combat engineers, cavalry, flamethrower tanks, Guards, railroad artillery, V-weapons, and dozens of other specialized types

  • Air units contain 40-60 aircraft ranging from obsolete biplanes to jet fighters to four-engine heavy bombers

  • Naval units vary from individual capital ships such as Bismarck and Ark Royal to river flotillas

Each game can be played individually or combined with one or more other games for larger campaigns. The ultimate goal of ESW is to integrate the entire series of games into Grand Europa, recreating the war from 1939 to 1945 or beyond.
