Drang Nach Osten!
Europa I: The Russian Front, 1941-1942
- Year of Publication: 1973
- Publisher: Game Designers’ Workshop
- Design: Paul R. Banner and Frank Chadwick
Drang Nach Osten! is an historical game/simulation of the German invasion of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on 22 June 1941 that led to the gates of Moscow and ultimately to the destruction of the Wehrmacht and the fall of the Third Reich. Drang Nach Osten! is a complete game of the largest invasion in history, but may also be incorporated into the larger series of game/simulations collectively titled Europa. Drang Nach Osten! carries the Russian campaign from June 1941 to the end of the Soviet winter counteroffensive in March 1942. Unentschieden (Europa II) continues the campaign through 1944.
Drang Nach Osten! is basically a two-player game, but its size lends itself admirably to multiple-commander team play. One side represents Germany and its allies; the other, the Soviet Union. The game is played in sequenced turns during which players move their units and engage in combat in an attempt to destroy enemy units and gain certain political-geographic objectives. The German player is attempting to, as outlined in Fuehrer directive number 22 (Fall Barbarossa), “crush Soviet Russia in a lightning campaign… ” destroying the Red Army as an effective fighting force and occupying several key cities in the Soviet Union. The Soviet player will attempt to stop him.
Scale: 16 miles per hex; half-monthly turns; ground units of corps, division, brigade, regiment, and battalion size; air units comprising 40-60 aircraft
Drang Nach Osten! was revised and published as Fire in the East in 1984.
