Narvik (1st edition)
Europa IV: The Campaign in Norway, 1940

  • Year of Publication: 1974
  • Publisher: Game Designers’ Workshop
  • Design: Paul R. Banner and Frank Chadwick

Narvik is a two player game. One side represents Norway and her allies (Britain, France and Poland) and the other, Germany. The game is played in sequenced turns during which players move their units and engage in combat to destroy enemy units and gain certain economically and strategically important geographic objectives. The German player will attempt to occupy Norway. The Norwegian player will attempt to prevent the occupation and/or extract the highest possible toll from the German player.

Narvik is actually two games in one. The historical game faithfully recreates the situation and explores the alternatives open to the opposing field commanders at the non-standard scale of two days per turn with ground combat units as small as companies. On the strategic level, Narvik at standard Europa scale may be combined with the other games of the series. To this end, in addition to the counters provided for the historical game, counters for the armed forces of Norway and Sweden are supplied in compatible strengths for the Europa system.

Narvik was revised and published in a new edition in 1980.

  • One full map (10) and two partial maps (5A and 11A)

  • Two full counter sheets (11 and 13) and one half counter sheet (12)
