Barbarossa Unleashed
(Working title)

Barbarossa Unleashed
Europa I: The Russian Front, 1941-1942

Drang Nach Osten, the first release in the Europa series of wargames, was published in 1973. The second edition, retitled Fire in the East and taking advantage of much newly available data at that time, was an improved version published in 1984. Over the ensuing 40+ years, far more information about the Russo-German War has become available, especially in Soviet/Russian archives.

Taking advantage of deep research into previously unknown sources, John Astell began the process of updating and improving Fire in the East as a fresh incarnation of Europa I, tentatively using the working title of Barbarossa Unleashed.

While it’s too early to predict a publication date, we know BU will offer upgraded maps, improved orders of battle and unit ratings (especially for the Soviet armed forces), and refined rules. The rules will permit players to choose a somewhat simpler, faster “core” version, or a more complicated “advanced” version for maximum simulation. Either way, the new edition’s unprecedented historical accuracy and time-tested rule systems will allow players an unsurpassed opportunity to conduct Operation Barbarossa and the war on the Russian Front from June 1941 through early 1942.

We’ll be releasing further details here as design and development continue.
