Case White
Europa VII: The Invasion of Poland, 1939

  • Year of Publication: 1977
  • Publisher: Game Designers’ Workshop
  • Design: Frank Alan Chadwick

On September 1, 1939, Germany unleashed a new weapon on the world that permanently changed the face of warfare: the Blitzkrieg. Before September, Poland had been a European power to reckon with, but in thirty short days the Germans reshuffled the balance of power. After one week the Polish army was everywhere in rapid retreat. After two weeks Warsaw was isolated and only scattered pockets of Polish troops still resisted. In two more weeks the campaign was over. And a new word was permanently added to the world’s military vocabulary: Panzer! Case White is an historical recreation of history’s first Blitzkrieg. It is both an exploration of what was and an investigation of what could have been. Case White is a two player game, with one player representing the German High Command and the other the Polish high command. The German must crush Poland in a lightning campaign. Speed is essential, for the campaign must be concluded in sufficient time to shift troops back to the West to forestall an Anglo-French offensive. The Polish player must prevent this by defending Poland and, failing this, sufficiently disrupting the German timetable for conquest. Both sides will maneuver their units and conduct combat in an attempt to achieve these goals.

Case White marks the 5th game published in the Europa Series of comprehensive division level games on World War II in Europe. Overall, Europa is intended to recreate WWII at the division level, using consistent unit strengths and mateable maps, while each individual Europa game deals in greater detail with a specific campaign or battle. If necessary for detailed historical accuracy or playability, individual games are presented at levels lower than division level or at differing scales, or with specialized non-standard rules. In this way, each game presents the greatest possible utility to the gamer interested only in the situation covered by the title, while also providing continuing Europa material to the followers of the Europa Series. Case White follows this lead by providing a game which uses a non-standard turn length (three day turns) with otherwise standard components.

Originally published in 1977 and packaged in a ziploc bag. Repackaged in box in 1979 with no changes to contents. Repackaged in box with different cover in 1985: “The 1985 edition of Case White incorporates several changes from the original 1977 edition. The rules have been updated to include changes in the Europa system since 1977. (For example, the air combat rules have been updated.) Europa maps 1B and 3B have replaced maps 1A and 3A. The counters are unchanged. Note: These changes update Case White but do not constitute a revision. The 1977 edition is entirely playable in its own right, and owners of the 1977 edition do not need any materials from the 1985 edition for use in Europa.”

Case White was completely revised and a new edition published in 1991 titled First to Fight

  • Three maps maps (1A, 3A, 13)

  • Two counter sheets with 480 counters (18, 19)
